inf,

originally inph, pl. infs or inves, narrowly: an artificial, more or less personalized injection or graft to diffuse a non-inheritable genetic and/or epigenetic patch in a multicellular organism or a single organ; relatively shallow (cosmetic aging, not depthwise growth), human infs may, throughout life, cause significant chimerization — genomic patchiness (esp. around the head). In a general sense, an inf is any targeted biological tool — from a virus-like patch delivery capsule or agency, to an engineered cell culture, to a strain or species evolved to act in a specific way on a biome.  ■    Civic science promoted accessible infing, inaugurated the Change; “rebootless” infs (effective in the same generation without the single-cell birth bottleneck) were, at first, little more than local tests for the inheritable genome edits but ended up assuming a central role — much like deep sleep, originally a rejuvenation procedure, became a human lifecycle pivot. Hands-on infing experience may have been what put to rest the instinctive fear of “biology getting out of control,” just like the advanced eyesight retired the fear of darkness; billions of human infs, from tiny personal fixes to complex universal featuresets, are a Knowledge record of the species' recent biological history.  ■    Earliest infs — essentially software — borrowed from the techniques and lore of programming: built-in redundancy and autocorrection, automated testing and evolving on a zoo of models, ever-higher-level languages, open collaborative development in the core with a peripheral industry of customization and personalization. For its near-central role in human biology, however, custom infing is notorious for its shallow modelling and disregard of a strategic direction; “every science ends up as art” having exhausted its subject, and the science of the human body — “known so well for so long,” perfected by Change, its highest function fully recreated in a Mind — may be approaching this transition. Never completely deterministic, infing is as practical as a hammer “even if you cant predict every smithereen flying from a blow”; modelling never gives perfect certainty, so its tempting to rely on the by now instinctive savoir-faire and “simply shoot” (“why model when you throw paint on canvas”). Inf diffusion is slow, so cases of irreversible self-harm have been rare; few bother to properly revert (as opposed to overpaint) a misfired inf within the same life: the next lifeshed will wash away most of your infery anyway. ■    Most infs are applicable at any age and gradually evaporate — “wear out” — over decades, years, sometimes months; some, however, are designed to be taken in or around the deep sleep — these enroot, by riding the organisms invelopment/development cycle, to last an entire life. Its often advised to start building your sleepover inf pack early and keep adding to it as your understanding matures (even if many take but a light refresher before going to sleep); by tradition, the package may be topped off with “birthday presents” or “fairy gifts” from life partners, relatives, friends: “networked familiality” — a “perversion of sexual reproduction” — underlies a familial convergence trend. A childs first inf is a universal experience (like the first step, tooth, word, glyph, the first poem) but adults specialize: often theres an “artist in the family” who maintains an inf archive and does the tribes genome gardening.
