knowledge

(as in e.g. “knowledge collective”) is recognized and taught as the third major intellectual domain after art and science, with its characteristic cravings — to record, index, categorize, to illustrate and meta-inform, to distill and separate — different but as fundamental as the traditional art-like or science-like creativities. Knowledge occupations — air for countless many — are second only to teaching in our “civilization of archivarians.”  ■    Those with a consensus mandate for irreversibly deleting information are always under pressure; it is accepted by now that “like a brain, we need to selectively forget to stay sane” but exactly what is to be vacuumed out is a never-ending controversy. Various “expiration bit” implementations make content self-dissolve unless it passes a threshold of reading and coning; invented for ephemera, theyve been hailed as a critical step towards sustainable Knowledge — if only to be obsoleted by new Arf. ■    Capitalized K. as the entirety of meaningful data in the public store implies a concentric structure — and may refer, depending on context, to different-sized central subsets: from the polished encyclopedic tip of maximum eyeball density (sometimes Message is described as the absolute summit, the core of the core); to the namespace-rich current activity archipelagos; to the oceanic library, progressively less structured and attended as you move farther out — from classics to ephemera to sparse scatterings of orphaned stashes and keyless residue-like dumps. In a holistic view, individual Knowledge bits, like atoms of an organism, matter less than the overarching structures; fleshless ghosts of the “missing links” participate in the Knowledge churn — books that left a mark but were lost can, like explay voids, be filled in again, however non-literally.
