Pseudorandom number generators may have been “the first feeleries” but modernitys quest for the perfect “uncrackable” randomness (or chemical purity, or measurement precision) is now seen as another mark of the “era of overfitting.” Sterile absolute randomness is as abundant as the world — it is the world — but our fascinations have changed: we scour the cold oceans of random for the enchanted isles of hairtangle; random is the daily bread in art, lifemaking, evolving — but the beautifully random is always that for someone: above and beyond an unpredictable value it reveals something whose very existence is a surprise. Best randomness is deep, lived, fertile — just never cheating: its more akin to global weather than tabletop dice.
